The Trouble with Prostates...

As we grow older, our hormone levels begin to change. Testosterone – the male hormone – decreases and estrogen – the female hormone – begins to increase.

This change in hormonal levels causes the testosterone in the prostate to combine with an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase and turn into a more potent form called dihydrotestosterone or DHT. It's this DHT that causes the prostate to start to grow and swell.

Which, in turn, causes it to squeeze the urethra. That leads to difficulty in urinating, emptying the bladder completely and the constant urge to urinate.

In other words, the sheer misery we call "prostate trouble."
